History
Beginning
in 1989, SACCATS was the first task force coordinated by the California
Highway Patrol and focuses on vehicle theft activity in both Sacramento
and Yolo counties. SACCATS is a multi-jurisdictional task force
comprised of the following agencies:
- California Highway Patrol
- Sacramento County Sheriff's Department
- Sacramento County Probation Department
- Yolo County District Attorney's Office
In
April 1998, SACCATS shifted its primary operational focus from the more
traditional, long-term investigative approach involved in vehicle theft
case development, to a new dynamic and proactive approach, focusing on
known vehicle thieves currently on probation or parole and the
geographic area thieves frequent. This new operational focus was
considered to be so successful at reducing the incidence of vehicle
theft for calendar year 1998 that it has resulted in permanent changes
to the SACCATS' mission.
Mission
SACCATS’
mission and operational objectives is to enhance, intensify and
strengthen local, county and state law enforcement efforts at reducing
the incidences of vehicle theft in Sacramento and Yolo Counties .
SACCATS’ mission and operational objectives are achieved using the following methodology:
- Identification, arrest and prosecution of auto thieves
- Targeted proactive enforcement efforts
- Continued officer education and training
- Continued public awareness activities
- Identify suspicious residential and business locations for chop shop activities
- Track, identify and analyze specific theft trends
- Assist local law enforcement, the public and private industry
